Maths

At High Down Schools we are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts. We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically.

We believe in promoting sustained and deepening understanding by employing a variety of mastery strategies, with teaching for conceptual understanding at the heart of everything we do. Our approach aims to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to develop independence, confidence and competence. We strive for our children to be independent mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world. At High Down we follow the White Rose structure for Mastery Maths and work closely with the Boolean Hub to support staff training. The Junior School children use Power Maths as the main Scheme of Work which builds upon the firm foundations of mastery maths taught at the Infant School.
